Short answer: a 9-inch space fits a 9″ base cabinet, a 9″ spice pull-out, or a 9″ wall cabinet up above the counter. If the gap is 6 inches, use a 6″ spice pull-out or a filler strip. At 12 or 15 inches you can fit a full-height pantry.
Cabinets that fit a 9-inch space
Our Seaport and Belmont lines make these 9″ wide pieces in every color:
| Cabinet | Size (W × H × D) | Inside |
|---|---|---|
| 9″ base cabinet | 9″ × 34½″ × 24″ | 1 door, 1 shelf |
| 9″ spice pull-out base | 9″ × 34½″ × 24″ | Pull-out with 3 shelves on a soft-close slide |
| 9″ wall cabinet, 30″ tall | 9″ × 30″ × 12″ | 1 door, 2 shelves |
| 9″ wall cabinet, 36″ tall | 9″ × 36″ × 12″ | 1 door, 2 shelves |
| 9″ wall cabinet, 42″ tall | 9″ × 42″ × 12″ | 1 door, 3 shelves |

Which one is most useful? In a narrow base spot, the spice pull-out usually wins: the whole unit slides out, so you can see and reach everything on its three shelves. A 9″ base cabinet with a door works too, but reaching into a 9-inch-wide opening is awkward. Up top, a 9″ wall cabinet holds spices, oils, vitamins or glasses.
What fits other narrow gaps
- 6 inches: a 6″ spice pull-out (3 shelves on a soft-close slide), or a filler strip that closes the gap.
- 12 inches: a 12″ wide tall pantry if you have floor-to-ceiling space, or a 12″ base or wall cabinet. See our guide to slim pantry cabinets.
- 15 inches: a 15″ tall pantry, a 15″ base or wall cabinet, or a 15″ trash pull-out.
How to measure the gap
- Use a tape measure, not a laser or phone app, and write down fractions of an inch.
- Measure the width at the top, the middle and the bottom. Walls are rarely perfectly straight. Go by the smallest number.
- Check what's next to the gap. Beside a wall, doors and drawers need room to open past the wall and its trim. Beside a refrigerator, its door needs room to swing fully open. A filler strip between the cabinet and the wall or appliance gives you that room.
- Measure the depth too: base cabinets are 24″ deep and wall cabinets are 12″ deep.
When your gap is between sizes
Cabinets come in 3-inch steps (6, 9, 12, 15 inches and up). If your gap is 10½″, choose the 9″ cabinet and close the extra 1½″ with a filler strip, cut to fit on site. Fillers come painted to match each of our colors.

Questions people ask
What cabinet fits a 9-inch space?
A 9″ base cabinet, a 9″ spice pull-out base, or a 9″ wall cabinet (30″, 36″ or 42″ tall). We make all of them in seven colors.
Is a 9-inch base cabinet useful?
Yes, especially as a spice pull-out: the whole unit slides out so you can reach all three shelves. A 9″ cabinet with a door works for baking sheets and trays stored on edge.
What do I do with a gap that isn't a standard size?
Choose the next cabinet size down and close the rest with a filler strip cut to fit.
